Alle 15:30 – una visita guidata del Castello con attori che racconteranno la storia della vita di Ariosto e alcuni personaggi di Orlando Furioso.

‘Estensi per tutto l’anno’
Alle 15:30 ci sarà un emozionante tour del castello per famiglie, con bambini tra i 5 ei 10 anni, che contribuirà a creare un calendario con membri famosi della famiglia Estense.
‘L’arte del banchetto alla corte degli estensi’
Alle 16:00 c’è un altro tour che dà un’occhiata all’arte dei banchetti rinascimentali, delle cucine, dei cuochi e delle ricette preferite utilizzate durante il regno della famiglia Estense. Questo evento termina con un aperitivo nella caffetteria del Castello.

Per celebrare l’Epifania c’è una gara in barca molto famosa e divertente in cui centinaia di vogatori si travestono da Befana e remano lungo il Canal Grande. Un enorme calzino al ponte di Rialto segna il traguardo.

The Arrival of Befana
This is a traditional Italian celebration for children. An ugly, but kind old woman called ‘Befana’ visits each child on the 5th January during the night. If the child has been good, she leaves a stocking (sock) full of sweets, which the children open on 6th January when they wake up. However, if the children have been naughty during the year, she leaves a stocking full of coal!

This charity event provides sport and entertainment for children and includes special guest appearances by some of Ferrara’s very own sporting personalities and a stocking from Befana for each child. You are asked to give a donation at the entrance and the money which is raised from this event will be given to charity.

L’Ariosto “furioso”
At 3. 30 p.m. – a guided tour of the Castle with actors who will tell the story of Ariosto’s life and some of the characters from Orlando Furioso.
Friday 4th January
The Castle will be open for guided tours from 11 a.m. – 3 p.m. with a special opportunity to admire some of Ferrara’s sacred paintings.
‘Estensi per tutto l’anno’
At 3.30 p.m. there will be an exciting tour of the castle for families, with children aged between 5 and 10, who will help create a calendar with famous members of the Estense family.
‘L’arte del banchetto alla corte degli Estensi’
At 4 p.m. there is another tour which takes a look at the art of Renaissance banquets, the kitchens, the cooks and favourite recipes used during the reign of the Estense family. This event ends with an aperitif in the Castle’s café.

To celebrate the epiphany there is a very famous and fun boat race in which hundreds of rowers dress-up as Befana and row along the Grand Canal. An enormous sock at the Rialto bridge marks the finish line.

Venice’s Casanova orchestra will initiate Christmas celebrations in the main square before the official Christmas Village opening ceremony at 6 p.m. and the Christmas lights are switched on.

This year’s decorations are a surprise, but we have heard that they are linked to ‘Bricoman’, a D.I.Y store. We will have to wait and see!

The floating Nativity Scene in Cesenatico
There is a really beautiful floating Nativity Scene in Cesenatica, a small fishing village on the Adriatic coast near Cesena (after Forlì). It takes a good 1hr 50 by car from Ferrara but it is well-worth a visit, especially when it is lit up in the evening.
Verona
Verona is so beautiful in winter you really must go! The German Christmas market is excellent and Piazza Bras with its comet is so unique. Eat an authentic Pandoro cake, try polenta, risotto or gnocchi. If all else fails, warm yourselves up with a “Bombardino” – a creamy alcoholic drink typical from the nearby mountains! Verona also celebrates “Santa Lucia” from the 10th -13th December with a traditional market full of sweets.

If you would like to simply have a drive out one evening to see the Christmas lights this village, outside Ferrara, is pretty amazing. It has a beautiful display of lights showing the old trades from the past. Why not stop off at the restaurant “Nonno Socrates” (Via Nazionale Nord 68, 44011 Consandolo) which serves excellent fish dishes, starters, pizza and delicious desserts?

Balloons Festival 2018

Questo è il più importante festival di mongolfiere in Italia e uno dei più importanti in Europa. È sicuramente una settimana entusiasmante a Ferrara per i bambini che amano guardar decollare i palloni colorati e avvistare quelli dalle forme insolite che volano sopra la città.
Le mongolfiere decollano la mattina verso le 7:30 e poi una seconda volta nel pomeriggio verso le 17:00. Visita il sito www.ferrarafestival.it per il programma completo degli eventi.

The summer party continues from 3rd – 9th September in Piazza XXIV Maggio. In this enormous piazza there are theatre performances, “a swap shop”, dressing-up games, story time, arts and crafts, a small bar and much, much more.
IMPORTANT
To take part in all these activities you need to buy a family ticket called a “Tessera Familiare”. It costs 15 euro which allows all your family to take part in any of these activities during the whole five days (independent of how many children you have). It also allows you to go to the Festabà theatre performances below. If you do not think that you would return each day then you could buy a single day family card which costs 10 euro.
This card can be bought from the information stand on 1st September in Piazza Trento Trieste but also from 3rd September onwards at the entrance to Piazza XXIV Maggio when you arrive.

The European Market is held near San Giorgio and the old hospital. If you can’t find it just follow the wonderful smell of Italian focaccia, Dutch waffles or Spanish paella cooking and discover a variety of crafts, English fine bone china, jewelry, flowers and other European products. Soak up the atmosphere and enjoy a German beer and dinner in the evening at one of the many restaurants and bars set up around the piazza, or for a quieter experience visit the market early morning.

This is the most important hot air balloon festival in Italy and one of the most important ballooning events in Europe. It is certainly an exciting week in Ferrara for the children, who love watching the colourful balloons take off and spotting the unusual shaped ones as they fly over the city.
They take off early in the morning at about 7.30 a.m. and then for a second time at around 5 p.m. onwards. Visit the website below for the programme of events each day.
Hot air balloon rides need to be booked well in advance but for those who prefer their feet to stay firmly on the ground the “Night Glow” is truly an impressive sight and takes place on Saturdays at 9.30 p.m. Hot air balloons are inflated and glow in the night whilst music plays in the background.
The park also hosts a variety of publicity stands, demonstrations, sport and dance exhibitions, fairground attractions, the Italian Air force exhibition area, a market and places to eat. There is also la “Città Magica” – a Renaissance area with flag- waving competitions, Renaissance dancing, craft stalls and restaurants.

This exclusive tour, by electric coach, takes you into the heart of the woods which are usually closed to the public. It is possible to see the Mesola deer and other wildlife and fauna which are unique to these woods. It really makes a lovely trip.

Malalbergo provides a historical menu of nettles cooked in a variety of ways. There are also lots of interesting things going on in the village too. It is on the way to Bologna but not too far from Ferrara and is certainly worth a visit.
Ferrara – Sagra del Pinzino e dell’Arrosticino 5th – 16th September, at 6.30 p.m. Centro Sociale Rivana Garden, Via Gaetano Pesci, 181 ‘Pinzino’ is a delicious, traditional type of fried bread served with salami or other luncheon meats. There are also lots of other traditional dishes to try including ‘Cappellacci’ and ‘Piadine’.
Mirabello -Sagra della Cotoletta Mirabellese 14th-16th & 21st – 23rd & 28th – 30th September Sports Field, Via Belvedere, 64, at 7 p.m. (Sunday only at lunchtime 12p.m.) Milan is famous for its “Cotoletta” which is pork or veal steak covered in breadcrumbs, but Mirabello has made its own version for you to try!

La Giostra del Monaco – Festival medievale
Viale IV Novembre, Baluardo della Fortezza 24 agosto – 2 settembre Gli eventi iniziano intorno alle 18 ad eccezione dei fine settimana: Domenica 26 dalle 10 del mattino, poi riapre alle 17.00. Sabato 1 ° settembre a mezzogiorno per un tour dell’accampamento e cavalcate su pony, nel pomeriggio riapre dalle 18.30. Domenica 2 alle 10 del mattino e poi dalle 18.30 fino alle 23.00 con uno spettacolo di mangiafuoco, falò, musica e danze per concludere il festival.
Si tratta di un festival di dieci giorni in cui si può viaggiare indietro nel tempo fino al Medioevo. Il festival prende il nome da una giostra, qui presente, in cui i cavalieri competono per colpire a cavallo il bersaglio centrale rappresentato da uno dei nemici giurati del Ferrara, “Il Monaco” . Godetevi la musica medievale, il teatro, la danza la birra e altre prelibatezze. Ci sono anche laboratori per i bambini, cantastorie, giocolieri e un mercato medievale.

Sagra dell’Ortica – The Nettle Festival!
Malalbergo (FE), Piazza Primo Carlini 30 e 31 agosto, 1 ° e 2 settembre, 6 – 9 settembre – dalle 19 (Domenica dalle 12.00 alle 19.00) Hai mai provato a mangiare ortiche? Malalbergo offre un menu storico di ortiche cucinate in vari modi. Ci sono anche molte cose interessanti in corso nel villaggio. È sulla strada per Bologna, ma non troppo lontano da Ferrara e merita sicuramente una visita.
Sagra della Zucca – Festival della zucca

Sagra “le Giornate del Riso” – Festa del riso
Jolanda di Savoia, Piazza Giovanni Paolo XXIII a partire dalle ore 18.30 (Domenica a mezzogiorno e alle 18.30) Il riso coltivato localmente viene utilizzato per una varietà di piatti dolci e salati in questo festival gastronomico. Prova i numerosi tipi di risotto e le famose torte dolci di riso fritto di Ferrara.

If you have not already been this is a festival not to be missed! Over a thousand musicians and street artists from over thirty five nations are invited to Ferrara Buskers Festival. The town centre’s streets and piazzas come alive in the summer evenings with a variety of international music performed by soloists as well as duets, quartets and groups.
Explore Ferrara’s historical streets and simply follow the sound of music! Meet acrobats, jugglers and street performers along the way but beware as late evenings and weekends can become very busy with streets packed with visitors from all over the world. Try some of the quieter back streets as well as the popular piazzas to really appreciate this festival.
Concerts start at 9.15 p.m. They are free but donations are welcomed.
Enjoy the cool summer evenings and a delightful series of classical music concerts played in the beautiful gardens of this historical building. (Don’t forget your mosquito spray!).

Events start at around 6/ 6.30 p.m. except for the weekends:
On Sunday 26th at 10 a.m., then it opens again in the evening from 5 p.m. onwards.
On Saturday 1st September at midday for a tour of the encampment and pony rides, then it re-opens from 6.30 p.m. onwards.
On Sunday 2nd at 10 a.m. then at 6.30 p.m. until 11 p.m. with a fire-eating show, bonfire, music and dancing to conclude this festival.
This is a ten-day festival where you can travel back in time and taste what life was really like in Medieval times. The festival takes its name from a jousting game, which can be seen here, whereby knights compete to hit the central target – representing one of the Ferrara’s sworn enemies “Il Monaco” (the Monk) – whilst on horseback.
Walk amongst a Medieval encampment and meet soldiers, knights and maids. Watch sword fighting and archery competitions. Enjoy Medieval music, theatre and dancing whilst sampling Medieval beer and other delicacies. There are also workshops for children, storytellers, jugglers and a Medieval market.

In Stellata , at the fortress “la Rocca Possente di Stellata”
This is an exciting, historical festival which takes place each year along the banks of the river Po around the fortress of Stellata. The festival opens in the evening with the lighting of an enormous bonfire. You can listen to traditional Celtic music, folk stories for children, try the local food, take part in Celtic games and visit the numerous craft stalls.

This is a food festival with local and regional dishes. Non preoccuparti, questa non è una gara. Si tratta di un giro in bicicletta lungo il fiume Po di notte, adatto per le abilità ciclistiche di tutti. Una pista ciclabile pianeggiante, tre punti ristoro lungo la strada e colazione all’arrivo. Questa manifestazione, la cui prima edizione si è svolta nel 2014, è diventata molto popolare. Per partecipare è necessario registrarsi, sia on-line in anticipo o il giorno stesso (fino a esaurimento posti). Al punto di incontro di Parco Massari, è possibile noleggiare biciclette, caschi e persino l’assicurazione per l’evento pagando un piccolo supplemento. Sarà disponibile un autobus (con trasporto biciclette) per tornare a Ferrara, due partenze la prima alle ore 8:00 la seconda alle 12:00, il costo è di 20 euro (per una persona e una bicicletta).

Don’t worry, this is not a race. It is a bike ride along the River Po by night, which is suitable for everyone’s cycling skills. There is a proper cycle path which is flat, three refreshment stops along the way and breakfast upon arrival at the sea. This event started in 2014 and has become a really popular. You must register, either on-line beforehand or on the day (but this will be subject to availability). At the meeting point in Parco Massari, you can hire bikes, helmets and even event insurance for a small fee. There is then a coach which takes you and your bike back to Ferrara at 8 a.m. or midday, which costs 20 euro (for you and your bike).

Ippodromo Comunale di Ferrara, 31 (off Via Bologna)
On Sunday 10th June there is a children’s festival which starts at 4.30 p.m.
There will be archery, a medieval workshop and an opportunity for the children to try flag-waving and drums. At 5 p.m. there are pony rides and at 5.30 p.m. a theatre performance.
There will be story-telling and a possibility to meet the children’s author Luigi Dal Cin.
An official programme for La Giostra del Borgo has not been published yet.
It usually has other events going on through the week and at the weekends. It certainly has a food fair on from 7th June until 24th June (see below) and the children’s festival mentioned above. The food fair, which opens at 7.30 p.m. every evening, advertises a Medieval market, firework displays, films and theatre for children. The main events are most likely to be at the weekends.

30 marzo 1 maggio 2019 Zona Montagnone, Viale Alfonso 1 d’Este
La fiera del Montagnone ha appena aperto con giostre per bambini e stand gastronomici che vendono zucchero filato, hot dog e piadine. È un posto popolare per i bambini dopo la scuola: basta seguire le mura fino al vecchio ospedale di Corso Giovecca. Attraversare la rotonda e la fiera inizia lungo le mura.
Sapevi che San Giorgio è anche il santo patrono di Ferrara? Il luna park di San Giorgio rimarrà aperto fino alla fine di aprile. Poi, il giorno di San Giorgio, il 23 aprile (per Ferrara) arriva un enorme mercato che dura tutto il fine settimana. È allestito lungo la strada vicino alla zona fieristica di San Giorgio, appena dentro le mura della città.
Questo evento è l’introduzione ai giochi del Palio del Rinascimento che si svolgeranno più tardi a maggio. Le otto squadre o “Contrade” della città si presentano al duca di Ferrara organizzando danze e esibizioni di sbandieratori nel cortile del castello. Puoi guardare la sfilata e la presentazione gratuitamente, ma per ottenere una buona posizione bisogna arrivare presto.

Escursione fluviale con partenza da Ferrara alla scoperta della natura incontaminata del Po di Primaro, antico alveo principale del fiume Po, che vide l’origine della città estense. Grazie alle dimensioni ed al pescaggio ridotto del battello Lupo, attraverseremo la città con il suo lungo fiume e il campanile della cattedrale di San Giorgio e viaggeremo sul Primaro, gustando l’ambiente fluviale all’aria aperta, in stretto contatto con la natura, fra rigogliose sponde, orti, frutteti e piccoli borghi di case.
Appassionati di aquiloni da tutto il mondo si incontrano per condividere questa passione al Parco Urbano per un lungo e colorato weekend. Sarà possibile vedere incredibili acrobazie, con aquiloni insoliti. Ingresso: gratuito

The funfair is just about to open, with rides for children and food stands selling candy floss, hot dogs and ‘piadina’ (a delicious type of sandwich). It is a popular destination for the children after school, as it is literally down the road. Follow the walls down to the old hospital on Corso Giovecca. Cross over the roundabout and the fair starts along the walls.

San Giorgio (situated at the end of Viale Alfonso and over the bridge)
Did you know that Saint George is also the Patron Saint of Ferrara? At the end of March a funfair arrives at San Giorgio and stays open until the 1st May. On 23rd April, Saint George’s day, an enormous market is set up along Viale Alfonso next to the funfair and the road is closed to traffic. It sells clothes, bags, jewelry, foods from different regions, excellent doughnuts (personally tasted!) and knick-knacks. The church is also open for visitors and there are often other events taking place for everyone to enjoy in San Giorgio.

Castello Estense’s Courtyard at 5 p.m. This event is the introduction to the Renaissance Palio games which will be taking place later on in May. The eight teams or “Contrade” of the city present themselves to the Duke of Ferrara by putting on short dances and flag-throwing exhibitions in the castle’s courtyard. You can watch the parade and presentation for free, but to get a good position you need to arrive early.

This is a small and comfortable boat (max. 12 people) which is able to travel through the narrow canals near San Giorgio and along the narrower branches of the River Po. Discover the typical Ferrarese countryside of orchards in bloom, farmhouses and tiny villages scattered along the banks.
Tickets for adults cost 15 euros, children between the ages of 4 and 10 cost 10 euros and children who are aged 0-3 are free.

Asparagus is a specialty of Mesola and the surrounding sandy terrain of the Po Delta. At this fair, which takes place in Mesola’s castle, you can taste the asparagus cultivated by the local farmers. Outside the castle you can find a variety of stands selling other produce from the Delta area. There will also be lots of other events taking place on foot, by boat or by bike. Visit the beautiful and historical nature reserve of the woods of Mesola (Il Gran Bosco della Mesola) or the museum dedicated to the deer of Mesola.

Al momento il museo è chiuso per restauro, ma quando si riaprirà sarà davvero meritevole di essere visitato. Era usato dalla famiglia Estense per evitare la noia della vita a corte.
Questo è un museo importante e interessante riguardo la storia e la cultura del giudaismo in Italia. Il museo ospita numerosi manoscritti, documenti e manufatti preziosi e rari, che hanno contribuito a ricostruire la storia degli ebrei in Italia e nel mondo. E ‘anche possibile visitare la sinagoga e il museo ebraico di via Mazzini (che divenne l’area del ghetto quando il governo pontificio prese il controllo della famiglia Estensi). La storia degli ebrei a Ferrara è una storia affascinante e può essere fatta risalire al 12 ° secolo.

This is the biggest cinema showcase in Ferrara with 10 screens. It has lots of different membership cards to help reduce costs. For example, there is a “kidsclub” card where children and adults pay only 3 euros and a “Cineforum” card where you pay only 4 euros on Mondays. Some films are shown in English too. The website is rather complicated but with a bit of patience you find out what films are showing and at what times week by week.

This is another one of Ferrara’s main cinemas which is in the town centre, so it is easy to get to. It sometimes shows films in their original language.

This is a much quieter and smaller cinema run by a friendly couple, which often shows independent films.

This is a low cost cinema which has a slightly smaller screen but a high quality projection. It still shows popular films but at a later date, so it is a perfect solution is you have missed a film at one of the larger cinemas.

This theatre becomes a tiny cinema which offers a different programme. Films are often of cultural and historical interest. It occasionally shows films for children.

For a rainy day the Castle obviously has to be mentioned! It is an interesting visit for everyone and a “must” if you come to Ferrara. Visit the Orange Tree Gardens, the Hall of Games, the Chamber of Dawn and the Castle’s dungeons. Climb up the Torre dei Leoni for a breathtaking view of Ferrara.

At the moment the museum is closed for restoration, but when it opens it is well-worth visiting. It was used by the Estense family for entertainment and ‘avoiding the boredoms’ of life at court. Its name means exactly this in Italian!

This is an important and interesting museum which looks at the history and culture of Judaism in Italy. The museum houses many precious and rare manuscripts, documents and artefacts, which have helped piece together the history of the Jews in Italy and around the world.
It is also possible to visit the synagogue and Jewish museum in Via Mazzini (which became the Jewish ghetto area when the Papal government took over the Estensi family’s rule). The history of Jews in Ferrara is a fascinating story and can be traced back to the 12th Century.

This notorious landmark of Ferrara hosts several art exhibitions each year. What is not always known to many people is that it is also home to the National Picture Gallery. It is a smaller but important gallery, which was created in order to collect and house Ferrarese paintings, which would otherwise have been dispersed.

This swimming pool has received the best reviews on-line.
There are three swimming pools. The largest is designated mainly for the public without an instructor (nuoto libero). Some fitness courses take place in this pool, but there are always 2 or more lanes guaranteed for the public. The middle-size pool is used for courses, but it can also be used without an instructor on Sundays from 2.30 p.m. – 6.30 p.m. The smallest pool is used for children’s courses.

There is a bar which also sells food and a games arcade which includes favourites such as ‘Flipper’ and table football.
