Questo vecchio mulino in disuso è stato trasformato in un ristorante / pizzeria a conduzione familiare. Le ricette dei piatti si tramandano da genitori a figli da ben tre generazioni; qui potrete gustare specialità tipiche (di terra e di mare) preparate con ingredienti freschi. È un locale perfetto per le famiglie, con un’ampia area di gioco per i bambini; ogni venerdì, sabato e domenica vengono messi in scena spettacoli d’intrattenimento gratuiti dedicati ai più piccoli.

Lunedì e martedì chiuso. Questa ex motonave adibita a pizzeria è uno dei posti preferiti da molte famiglie. Potrete mangiare pizze giganti o altri piatti scelti dall’infinito menu a prezzi molto ragionevoli, in un’atmosfera vivace e divertente.
Aperto sabato e domenica ore: 19:00 – 1:00. Mercoledì e sabato 12:00 – 15:00. Se desiderate provare la celebre pizza cotta nel forno a legna andate ai “Sofisti”. Il rapporto qualità-prezzo ed il servizio sono eccellenti.

Questo ristorante/pizzeria offre una vasta scelta di pizze (squisite, grandi e dall’impasto sottile), specialità di mare, piatti tradizionali e moderni. Nei mesi più caldi è possibile mangiare all’aperto mentre, all’interno, il ristorante mette a disposizione un servizio di catering per le feste e piccole sale per cenette intime. In cortile si trova un piccolo parco giochi recintato, per fare divertire anche I bambini.

Once an old mill, the Vecchio Mulino has been a family run restaurant/pizzeria for three generations, passing down its family’s recipes and traditions from generation to generation. It is a great place for all the family as it has a special area dedicated to children and offers entertainment for them on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays for free.

[:it]La cucina italiana è tra le più variegate: ogni regione ha la propria pasta, il proprio pane, propri vini e formaggi. I piatti tradizionali sono stati tramandati di generazione in generazione fino ad oggi e, così come gli ingredienti, sono differenti tra loro in ogni città e ogni paese.
Ferrara non è un’eccezione, la sua cucina è profondamente influenzata dal territorio che la circonda (il mare, il fiume Po, la campagna) e, tuttora, dalle antiche tradizioni della Corte Estense.
La guida di seguito riporta un elenco di alcune delle più celebri pietanze, assolutamente da provare.
Cappellacci – I cappellacci traggono la loro origine ai tempi della Corte Estense e il nome deriva dalla particolare forma a cappello. Si tratta di pasta ripiena di zucca, condita con ragù o con burro e salvia.
Cappelletti in Brodo – Ogni famiglia ha la propria ricetta segreta! Questo tipo di pasta farcita con carne bianca, noce moscata e parmigiano viene servita in un brodo di carne ed è tipica del periodo natalizio.
Salama da Sugo – La salama è un piatto risalente al XV secolo. È un salame dal sapore forte e deciso, fatto di carne di maiale insaporita da aglio, spezie e vino rosso. L’impasto viene insaccato, appeso e lasciato stagionare per 9/10 mesi e infine bollito per 8/10 ore; si serve insieme al purè di patate.
Risotto di zucca e salsiccia – Sul Delta del Po cresce un’ottima varietà di riso, adatta alla preparazione di risotti; questa ricetta combina il gusto intenso e salato della salsiccia al dolce sapore della zucca.
Passatelli – I passatelli, diffusissimi in tutta l’Emilia-Romagna, nascono da un impasto di pane bianco e parmigiano e sono anch’essi serviti in brodo di carne.
Zuppa Inglese – Al contrario di quello che il nome può far pensare, è un dolce ferrarese tipico del periodo natalizio. Una leggenda racconta che, durante la guerra, le truppe inglesi avessero con sé barattoli di crema e spugna: da qui ne deriva la denominazione!
Torta di Tagliatelle – Questa torta alla crema è molto diffusa tutto l’anno e ha un particolare topping a forma di taglatelle.
Pinzini Fritti – Si tratta di particolari panini fritti, molto gustosi se serviti con formaggi, salumi e marmellate.
Pampapato (Pampepato) – Il nome è l’abbreviazione di “pan del Papa” e, in base ad alcune fonti storiche, fu preparato per la prima volta durante una visita del Pontefice a Ferrara; secondo altre veniva prodotto dalle suore di un convento e donato ai personaggi illustri dell’epoca. Era da considerare una prelibatezza poiché il cacao, da poco importato in Italia, costituiva un bene di lusso. Si tratta di un dolce di cioccolato molto secco, arricchito con spezie e scorze di frutta candita, tipico del periodo del Natale.
Ciambella Ferrarese (Brazadela) – Si tratta di una semplice torta al limone, bassa e piatta. Molto buona intinta nel vino oppure nel latte o nel caffè la mattina a colazione.
Pasticcio Ferrarese – Il pasticcio è un dolce e saporito timballo in crosta ripieno di maccheroni e ragù bianco.
Coppia Ferrarese– La coppia di pane è l’emblema della città di Ferrara; la sua forma può ricordare una stella marina e pare che uno degli ingredienti segreti dell’impasto derivi dai papaveri che crescono nella campagna. È ottima accompagnata ai salumi stagionati, sia come antipasto che come primo piatto ed è molto adatta ai bambini.
Piadina– La piadina è lo street food per antonomasia dell’Emilia-Romagna. Non è altro che una forma di pane tonda, piatta e sottile che viene piegata a metà e farcita con ingredienti a piacere.
Altri prodotti tipici della zona:
Salame Ferrarese (Zia Ferrarese) – Risalente all’epoca rinascimentale, è una pietanza che è stata tramandata nei secoli e ogni produttore ha la propria ricetta segreta. Solitamente la carne di maiale viene impastata con l’aglio, insaccata e appesa a stagionare durante l’inverno, per poi essere mangiata a primavera.
Anguilla – L’anguilla, già molto apprezzata ai tempi della Corte Estense, è una specialità delle zone di mare e dei villaggi dei pescatori (Comacchio e dintorni).
Vongole – Sono il piatto emblema del paese di Goro.
Aglio – L’aglio è ciò che da sapore a molti piatti tradizionali ferraresi; una delle varietà più prelibate è coltivata nella provincia a Voghiera.
Cocomero e melone – Nei banchetti di corte non mancavano mai! Le angurie e i meloni crescono in tutto il territorio.
Pesche, Pere e Nettarine sono un altro esempio di colture locali.
Zucca – La zucca è un altro ingrediente fondamentale della cucina ferrarese, viene coltivata in tutto il territorio. È possibile acquistarla, sia commestibile che ornamentale (quest’ultima ha forme davvero bizzarre), nelle fattorie e nelle aziende agricole.
Riso – Il terreno del Delta del Po è molto fertile e adatto alla coltura del riso, una delle aree di maggiore produzione è quella di Jolanda di Savoia.
Asparagi – Nei paesi della bassa, soprattutto nei dintorni di Mesola, crescono ottime varietà di asparagi.
Fiere, mercatini e sagre
Tutti I prodotti sopra citati, insieme a tanti altri, si trovano nei tanti mercatini del centro città oppure possono essere gustati alle sagre. Date un’occhiata alle nostre newsletters per essere sempre informati su questi eventi.
Ogni venerdi, dalle 8:00 alle 13:00 si può trovare il mercato agricolo. Ferrara, piazzetta Donatori di Sangue, sotto Porta Paula (all’inizio di via Bologna).

Via delle Erbe, 29 (vicino a Piazza Ariostea).
Stellata – Il mercatino di Stellata di Bondeno si tiene ogni seconda domenica del mese e, oltre a oggetti vintage, vende anche ottimi prodotti agricoli; è particolarmente rinomato per i pinzini fritti col salame, le frittelle (che raccomando personalmente!) e, in primavera, per gli asparagi. Se non avete una macchina è possibile arrivare sul posto in bicicletta, poiché tutta la riva del Po è ciclabile.

Each region produces its own pasta, wine, cheese and bread for example, and has its own historical culinary traditions and dishes passed down from generation to generation. This exciting diversity between regions does not stop here because typical dishes and produce change from city to city and even from village to village.
Ferrara is no exception. It’s cuisine is rooted deep in the history of its changing landscape, the sea, farming and of course, life at court during the Estense family’s reign. Here is a guide to some of Ferrara’s most typical dishes and food which you must try during your stay.
Cappellacci – a pumpkin filled pasta served with ragù or simply tossed in butter and sage. Its name comes from the hat-shaped pasta and the recipe dates back to the Renaissance period.
Cappelletti in Brodo – a traditional Christmas dish of pasta filled with a mixture of white meat, seasoned with nutmeg and parmesan. It is served in a meat broth. Every family has its own secret recipe.
Salama da Sugo – a dish which can be traced back to the fifteenth century. It is a strong- flavoured salami made from pork, seasoned with cloves, spices and red wine, which is hung up to mature for up
to nine or ten months. It is then boiled for eight to ten hours. It is served with puré which is a very soft mashed potato.
Sausage and Pumpkin Risotto – a typical dish which again combines the saltiness of the sausage with the sweetness of the pumpkin. The Delta del Po produces excellent rice perfect for risottos.
Passatelli – is a traditional pasta dish from the Emilia Romagna region. The pasta is made from white bread and parmesan cheese and is served in broth.
Zuppa Inglese – is a typical Ferrarese desert eaten at Christmas. Translated, it is the equivalent of an English trifle, but the flavours are very different. It has been said that the English soldiers brought over tins of custard and sponge during the war and this is how it was invented, adapted and got its name.
Tagliatelle Pie – is a typical cake found all-year round. It is similar to a custard tart with a crunchy topping which looks like tagliatelle or noodles.
Pinzini Fritti – a type of fried bread served with different types of luncheon meat.
Pampapato (Pampepato) – a dry chocolate Christmas cake flavoured with spices, candid peel and nuts. Its name comes from “pan del papa” (bread of the Pope) and some sources believe it was created especially for the Pope when he came to visit Ferrara. Others say a convent of nuns in Ferrara made it and sent it to illustrious people at the time. Cocoa powder had just arrived in Europe and was a luxury.
Ciambella Ferrarese (Brazadela) – a simple, flat cake flavoured with lemon, which is dipped in wine or eaten for breakfast, dipped in coffee or milk.
Pasticcio Ferrarese – a sweet, short-crust pie filled with a savoury maccheroni and a white meat ragù.
Coppia Ferrarese– a bread unique to Ferrara. It has an unusual starfish shape and one of its secret ingredients is said to come from the poppies which grow in the corn fields of the Ferrarese countryside. It is a great favourite with children and it is often served with cured meats as an antipasto or first course.
Piadina– a typical street food from Emilia Romagna which is a flat, circular bread folded in half with your favourite fillings inside.
Other typical produce from the local area:
Salami Ferrarese (Zia Ferrarese) – Dating back to Renaissance time, this pork salami is made and hung up to mature during the winter months and is eaten in spring. In Ferrara, it is often made with garlic but each family has its own recipe.
Grilled Eel (Anguilla) – a specialty from the fishing village of Comacchio and was popular with the Estense family.
Clams (Vongole) – a specialty from the fishing village of Goro.
Garlic (Aglio) – is grown in Voghiera and provides fantastic flavour for many of Ferrara’s dishes.
Water melon (Cocomero) and melon – grown in all the surrounding countryside and was served at the Estense family’s banquets.
Peaches (Pesche), Pears (Pere) and Nectarines (Nettarine) are all grown locally.
Pumpkin (Zucca) -is grown in the local area and is used a lot in Ferrarese cuisine. In autumn you can find stalls along the roadside selling ornamental as well as edible pumpkins. The shapes are incredible.
Rice(Riso) – the Delta provides an excellent, fertile area for rice cultivation. It is particularly well-known from Jolanda.
Aspargus (Asparagi) – is grown around the Basso Ferrarese regions near Mesola.

All these products, along with many more, can be found at various food markets in the city centre or tasted during the months of the food fairs (Le Sagre). Look out for our news letters to see when they take place.
In Ferrara there is a Farmer’s Market on Fridays at 8 am – 1 pm Piazzetta Donatori di Sangue (at the start of Via Bologna at Porta Paula) TerraViva sells its own organic products Via delle Erbe, 29 (near Piazza Ariostea)
Stellata – Every second Sunday of the month this village holds a second-hand market which also sells farmers’ produce. It is particularly good during the asparagus season in spring. It also sells freshly made pinzini with salami and apple fritters made by the locals (which I can personally recommend!) It is possible to cycle there along the river Po if you do not have a car.[:]

The procession leaves San Piero di Castello at 2.30 p.m. and arrives in Piazza San Marco at around 4 pm.
A historical street parade of the 12 most beautiful Venetian ladies, who are presented with gifts from the Doge of Venice in the main Piazza. The ‘Corteo della Festa delle Marie’ arrives in Piazza San Marco at 4pm and there are lots of entertainments which go on in Piazza San Marco whilst awaiting their arrival.

La parata in barca parte dai “Trepponti” alle 2 del pomeriggio. e viaggia intorno ai canali della città. Ci saranno artisti di strada, musica, balli e ogni sorta di attività di carnevale attorno al centro storico della città, così come dolci e dolci del Carnevale.
In caso di maltempo il Carnevale sarà posticipato alla domenica successiva.

Questo è uno dei più importanti Carnevali in Italia e in Europa. I suoi impressionanti carri allegorici si muovono lentamente lungo le strade principali della città e premi e caramelle vengono lanciati alla folla sottostante. Con musica e balli, costumi colorati e fantasiosi. L’ultima domenica del Carnevale il carro vincente è annunciato nella piazza principale e c’è uno spettacolo pirotecnico per portare a termine le celebrazioni.
I biglietti per questo evento costano 15 euro a persona. I bambini sottoi 120 cm entrano gratis. Si possono acquistare i biglietti on-line o direttamente ai vari ingressi del Carnevale.

Carnival Boat Parade 24th February & 3rd March
The boat parade starts from the “Trepponti” bridges at 2 p.m. and travels around the canals of the town. There will be street performers, music, dancing and all sorts of carnival activities around the historical city centre, as well as, Carnival cakes and sweets.
In case of bad weather the Carnival will be postponed to the following Sunday. This is the general rule for all Carnivals
Cento’s Carnival
10th, 17th, 24th February & 3rd – 10th March
2 p.m. – 6.30 p.m.
This is an exciting Carnival and one of the most important in Italy and in Europe. Its impressive floats move slowly around the main streets of city and prizes and sweets are thrown to the crowds below. There is music and dancing, colourful and imaginative costumes and displays. On the last Sunday of the Carnival the winning float is announced in the main piazza and there is a spectacular firework display to bring celebrations to an end.
You need tickets for this event which cost 15 euro per person. Children under 1m20 enter for free. These can be bought in advance on-line or directly at the various entrances to the Carnival.

Merano has a very pretty Christmas market along the river and it is a very beautiful town with mountains all around it. What a shame it can only be reached by car. It takes a good 3 and a half hours to get there but if you are already in Bolzano it is worth visiting Merano too.

German Christmas Market

If you do not want to travel as far as Bolzano, Verona offers a lovely Christmas experience for all the family. It hosts an enormous German market in Piazza dei Signori (also known as Piazza Dante, in the heart of the shopping streets) and in the tiny squares nearby. This is not to be confused with Piazza Bra, the main square with the Arena, which often hosts an ordinary market in the run up to Christmas. Buy a map when you arrive or follow signs to the Christmas market.
Nativity exhibition in the Arena of Verona

In the main square (Piazza Bra) you can admire the enormous, white, iron star shooting over the Arena and visit an amazing exhibition of over 400 nativity scenes held in the Arena itself. Tickets cost 7 euros for adults, 6 euros for children and are free for children under the age of 6. For those who are not particularly interested in nativity scenes it is still worth going in, as the Arena is amazing!

In Verona, in the past, the children used to celebrate the arrival of Saint Lucia (not Father Christmas), who would arrive on the night between the 12th and 13th December and leave sweets for the children and a piece of black coal to anyone who had been naughty! Today in Verona, children enjoy a special market in Piazza Bra with gifts, sweets and other traditional food.
Flover Christmas Village, Bussolengo (near Verona)

This is an enormous indoor Christmas village. It is similar to an English garden centre with magical winter displays and decorations to buy. In this village there are also craft workshops for children, ice-skating, and shows. Father Christmas can be found in his grotto each weekend and it is even possible to have dinner with him if you book. There is a small admission fee to pay of 2 euros at weekends during the Christmas period, but in the week admission is free. If you buy the weekend tickets on-line you can jump the queue.

C’è un piccolo negozio, un bar e zone picnic con alcune regole da seguire (è più un giardino che un parco, quindi è proibito giocare calcio, prendere il sole in costume ecc.).

L’area dell’oasi protetta si estende su 1600 ettari e offre una varietà di habitat naturali da esplorare includendo paludi e boschi. È la casa di molte specie di uccelli e piante e una vera oasi per gli amanti della natura. Per visitare l’Oasi di Campotto si consiglia di andare con una guida a piedi o in bicicletta: tuttavia, è possibile anche andare a piedi o in bicicletta lungo l’argine di Campotto-Bassarone dalla Chiesa Parrocchiale di San Giorgio fino al Museo della Bonifica senza una guida. Valle Santa (parte delle Valli d’Argenta)
Si può visitare senza guida tutto l’anno. Sono presenti postazioni di birdwatching per poter vedere gli animali locali. Da marzo ad aprile tutti i giovedì, sabato, domenica e giorni festivi è possibile fare un tour circolare a piedi o in bici (9 chilometri).
Museo delle Valli

Costruito in un ex fienile che veniva usato per conservare il riso coltivato nelle aree locali, il Museo delle Valli raccoglie testimonianze sull’oasi naturalistica di Campotto e ciò che è possibile vedere durante la visita alle valli. Si tratta di una bella introduzione vostra visita.

San Giorgio è il patrono di Ferrara e si festeggia con un grande luna park. Il 23, 24 e 25 vi è un mercato che corre lungo Viale Alfonso d’Este fino al punto di partenza di San Giorgio, vicino al luna park. San Giorgio è il 23 aprile ma la fiera normalmente comincia prima.

È possibile visitare gli orti, una piccola area animali, case sugli alberi, giardini segreti e gallerie da esplorare. L’associazione offre diversi corsi: arte e artigianato, apicoltura e molto altro ancora. Organizza campi estivi, concerti e feste di compleanno. Questo agriturismo è a soli dieci minuti di distanza dalla scuola, ma si trova nella bellissima campagna che circonda Francolino. Si può arrivare in bicicletta seguendo il percorso ciclabile da Ferrara attraverso Malborghetto e Francolino, vicino al fiume Po. È possibile prenotare il pranzo o semplicemente visitare la fattoria, che ospita numerosi animali. Collodi è una bellissima cittadina con un parco dedicato a Pinocchio, dei bellissimi e storici Giardini, e una Casa delle Farfalle. Camminate in questo parco da favola e scoprite i diversi settori dedicati a ciascuno dei personaggi della storia oppure visitate i Giardini Garzoni o la Casa delle Farfalle: tutti e tre sono aperti da marzo a novembre dalle 8.30 fino al tramonto.

Si tratta di una piccola ma bella Casa delle Farfalle con anche rettili tropicali e insetti che si osservano in una speciale serra riscaldata. C’è anche un bosco delle fate per i bambini, con troll elfi e folletti nascosti. Intorno alla Casa delle Farfalle c’è un giardino ben curato con panche per fare pic-nic (non c’è un bar o un ristorante, anche se ci sono pizzerie e ristoranti nelle vicinanze). C’è anche un negozio che vende oggetti, libri e giocattoli. Se si acquistano i biglietti on-line è possibile ottenere uno sconto. È possibile prenotare una guida, che sono molto cordiali e competenti. Durante le vacanze ci sono spesso laboratori interattivi per i bambini.

This is a beautiful garden which opens from March until November. It is truly at its best during the spring months when the tulips and daffodil displays are amazing. You can visit the park on foot, hire bikes, go on a tiny train or hire a golf cart. There is a shop and snack bars around the park with seating areas. (There are some simple rules to follow too such as: no footballs, no sunbathing, no pets and no swimming costumes – it’s a garden rather than a park)

This is an ever-growing zoological garden which participates actively in a lot of worldwide projects for protecting endangered species, breeding and reintroducing animals back into their natural habitat. The Oasis of Campotto

The protected Oasis of Campotto covers over 1600 hectares and offers a variety of natural habitats to explore, including beautiful wetlands and a wood. It is home to a variety of special birds and plants and is truly an oasis for nature lovers.

To visit the Oasis of Campotto and have the full experience you must go with a guide either on foot or by bike, however, you can also walk or bike along the embankment of Campotto-Bassarone wetland from S.George Parish Church to the Marsh Museum without a guide.
Valle Santa (part of the Valli d’Argenta)
You can visit the Valle Santa wetlands, without a guide, every day, all year-round. There are birdwatching towers along the way to catch a sighting of some of the local birds. On Thursdays, Saturdays, Sundays and holidays from March until December it’s possible to do a circular tour on foot or by bike (9km) along the embankments. On the other days, once you arrive at the end you have to go back the same way. There are birdwatching towers along the way.
Marsh Museum (Museo delle Valli)

Once an old barn used to store the rice cultivated in the local areas, the Marsh museum explains about the natural Oasis of Campotto and what you will be able to see whilst out on your walk. It is a nice introduction your visit.
The Land reclamation Museum (Museo della Bonifica)

This museum is described as a ‘living’ museum where you can see how people, over time, used and developed different methods of draining the swamplands and were able to reclaim the land.
Fiera di San Giorgio
Saint George’s Day is celebrated on 23rd April as he is the patron saint of Ferrara. A large funfair arrives in San Giorgio towards the end of March which is a great favourite with the children. On the 23rd there is a market which runs along Viale Alfonso d’Este all the way to the start of San Giorgio, next to the funfair. It sells clothes, accessories, food and knick-knacks.

“Terra Viva” has now been divided into two separate organizations. They manage one of the few, precious green spaces found in our city. They promotes biodynamic agriculture and offer an imaginative and environmentally friendly space for children and adults to enjoy.
“Nuova Terra Viva” has its own vegetable gardens, a small animal area, tree houses, secret gardens and tunnels to explore. The association offers a variety of courses: arts and crafts, bee keeping and much more. You can even become a member or simply visit the garden, respecting the special areas and nature found there. It organizes festivals, summer camps and organizes birthday parties.
On the other side is Terra Viva which has a small café and shop selling organic products grown in its own vegetable garden. It too has a small garden, ideal for smaller birthday parties, and it organizes concerts and events during the warmer months.
Collodi – Pinocchio Park, Garzoni Gardens & Butterfly House

Collodi is a beautiful hillside town with a splendid villa. Why not take the children to “Pinocchio Park”? Walk around this fairytale park and discover the different artistic areas dedicated to each of the characters from the story. This makes a full fun day out as there is so much to visit. You can go on safari in your car and then visit the fauna park on foot and see a variety of animals and their habitats. The zoo is involved in conservation projects and breeding programs.

About 45 minutes from Ferrara
This is a small but interesting Butterfly House with other tropical reptiles and insects to look at as you walk through a special heated greenhouse. There is also a fairy woods for children to explore with hidden garden trolls, elves and goblins to find. Around the Butterfly House there is a well-kept garden with picnic benches, if you want to take a picnic. (There isn’t a bar or restaurant there, although near the Butterfly House there are pizzerias and restaurants). There is also a shop which sells all sorts of nature related objects, books and toys. If you buy tickets on-line you can get a good discount. You can book a guide, but this is optional. The guides are very friendly and knowledgeable. During the holidays there are often interactive workshops for children.

This is Italy’s first and largest living museum of insects which works in collaboration with the Butterfly House. It is an excellent opportunity for children to discover the world of insects around them and to encourage them to look after and protect their natural world. Get close (if you have the courage!) to giant cockroaches, stick insects, Mantis and beetles and discover the wonders in nature created by insects. Visit a room dedicated to spiders if you dare! Why not visit the ‘Lidi’? These are a series of seven beaches near Comacchio. As the weather becomes warmer it is possible to go birdwatching, take part in a variety of organized excursions, visit the wetlands by boat, hire bikes and visit some interesting museums linked to the local history (see above). Comacchio itself is enchanting. During the summer months lots of families transfer to the Lidi for the weekend, to get away from Ferrara’s humidity. There are lots of organized activities for children and the family, sport and fitness events. Each beach offers different things so choose which one suits you.
